Coming Out:  Understanding the Process

October 11 is National Coming Out Day. Every year on National Coming Out Day, The LGBTQ+ community celebrate coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer  This year will mark the 32nd anniversary of National Coming Out Day!

This is a live, synchronous 3 hour webinar.

Description: This workshop will focus on how to broach sexuality, sexual orientation and gender identity with your clients.  The Coming Out Square activity will be used to help demonstrate the importance of the coming out process. The workshop will also include discussion around the coming out process and what it means for different clients.   

Learning objectives: 

1.  Participants will be able to identify how to broach difficult topics including the coming out process with their clients.

2.  Participants will better understand the coming out process through a hands-on activity. 

3.  Participants will be able to examine and discuss the coming out process with their clients.

Presenter bio: Becca Smith, LPC, CPCS  Becca earned a Master of Arts in Community/Agency Counseling in 1999 from Bradley University in Peoria, IL. After graduation, Becca worked in community mental health and private practice. Becca started in college counseling in 2010 at Aurora University in Aurora, IL. In 2012, she moved to Georgia to live in a warmer climate. She joined the Valdosta State University Counseling Center and was promoted to Assistant Director in 2014. In 2015, Becca joined LPCA of GA and trained to become a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor. Becca enjoys providing clinical supervision within the college counseling center, but also supervises APC’s in her spare time. Becca moved to Savannah, GA in 2018 and joined the Georgia Southern University Counseling Center as the Assistant Director on the Armstrong Campus. She became the Director of the Counseling Center at Berry College in May 2021. Becca is also very involved in the American College Counseling Association. She became the Social Media Chair in 2016 and then became the Secretary on the Executive Board in 2018. In 2021 she was named President Elect of ACCA and will serve three years on the board, one as President Elect, then as President and lastly as Past President. Becca’s professional interests include but are not limited to anxiety, including obsessive compulsive disorder, perfectionism and social anxiety, traumatic stress including racial trauma, depression including suicidal ideation and relationship issues. She also has a special interest in working with the LGBTQ+ population, especially those who experience gender identity issues.
