Professional self-care is paramount for competent and ethical  practice. The demands of working through a pandemic, client-concerns, vicarious trauma and professional obligations all demand our attention.  That is not even considering our demands outside of our profession. This course is designed to to assist fellow counselors in creating space for their own mental challenges, while still being an effective, competent and ethical counselor. This workshop will allow attendees to understand and address the stigma that counselors  must be perfect, without having their own diagnoses, pain points, etc. This workshop is intended to provide a safe space for attendees to simply BE as well as assist them in taking their own challenges to help them become an even more efficient and sought after Clinician.

1:00 PM             There's more to me than HIV! (1.5 CORE CE Hours)

Attendees will learn about the mental health challenges associated with HIV by hearing first-hand accounts from people living with the disease (video ), revealing how HIV impacted them across multiple domains. This will include topics such as personal identity, grief, stigma, and accessing non-judgmental supports following diagnosis. Other important topics will include existential questioning; Why did this happen to me? Who am I now that I have this disease? What will my life be like now? The answers to many of these questions can be found through an existential process, rich in meaning-making opportunities that highlight: "There's more to me than HIV!"

Michael Drew, LPC. After 20 years of firefighting, Michael Drew completed a Bachelor’s Degree from Empire State College, a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling from St. John Fisher College, and a Doctorate in Counselor Education from the University of Georgia.

Michael’s clinical experience includes serving in a Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment Program, Community Mental Health Center, and an HIV Community Clinic. He also teaches mental health classes at the Athens Police Academy and serves as an adjunct instructor at Richmont Graduate University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Michael currently serves as a Police Co-Responder for Advantage Behavioral Health, in partnership with the Athens Clarke County Police Department. Their Crisis Intervention Unit responds to calls involving people experiencing emotional distress. Much of his work with the ACCPD involves performing outreach and linking people with community resources, including those without housing. This specialized unit is led by Sgt. Robie Cochrane, and Katie McFarland, LCSW.

Presenter Bio:  Mr. Johnnie L Jenkins, III LPC, CPCS, RPT-S, Mr. Jenkins is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, and Certified Professional Clinical Supervisor in Georgia with more than 20 years’ experience.  Mr. Jenkins’ private practice experience includes working with families. He holds memberships in the American Counseling Association, the Association for Play Therapy, the Licensed Professional Counselor Association of Georgia, and the Georgia Association for Play Therapy. He holds the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Biology from Mercer University in Macon, GA and a Master of Arts Degree in Psychology from the Georgia School of Professional Psychology.  Mr. Jenkins was an adjunct at Argosy University Atlanta teaching classes in Play therapy, Child and Adolescent Counseling, Family and Couples Counseling, and Practicum and Supervision.  He was also Chair of the Human Services Department. Mr. Jenkins is currently pursuing a PhD in Public Policy from Walden University.

Erika R. Utley (The Smileologist) is the CEO/ Founder of Smileology Counseling Services, LLC where her mission is to help people learn the art of smiling from within. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of West Georgia and received her Master’s Degree in Community Counseling from Clark Atlanta University. Erika is a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Certified Grief Specialist  and a Certified Anger Management Specialist. She is a strong advocate for community growth by way of outreach, mentorship and therapy.
