Day 1:   AM 

Getting to the Root of Addiction: Uncovering and Healing Childhood Trauma Wounds  The Adverse Childhood Experiences study demonstrates links between childhood trauma and adult addiction, behavioral health issues, and diseases that adults die from. SAMHSA has determined that being trauma-informed is the minimum standard for behavioral health care and issued guidelines for its implementation in TIP 57. The presenter has conceptualized this progression of trauma-care as a pyramid and will review the steps to increasing your skills in trauma care from trauma-informed to trauma expert. After a brief review of the research, we will review assessment and educational tools to help clients understand more clearly the impact of trauma in their lives.

Participants will:

1. Discuss research which points to the importance of trauma informed behavioral healthcare and its benefit to their clients.

2. Demonstrate how to use one trauma-source assessment and one tool for educating clients about the impact of trauma.

3. Define TIP 57 requirements for the implementation of trauma informed care in an effective and ethical manner.

Day 2: PM: 

Empowering, Bridging, Connecting Healing:  Breaking the No Talk Rules Around Race, Culture, Addiction, and Recovery. Ethical and professional considerations.

Learning objectives:

1. Participants to understand the systemic nature of oppression in counseling as it relates to addictions.
2. Participants will gain an awareness of skill development and personal development necessary to address intersections of systemic oppression race, gender, identity, and addictions.
3. Participants will examine ethical issues and considerations surrounding white fragility, rules of engagement and the exploration of “safe space” in counseling People of Color.

Day 3:  AM:   

Addressing Substance Use in Private Practice using effective Brief Intervention and Motivational Interviewing Techniques  

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the clinical benefits of a Brief Intervention (BI) and the evidence supporting these expectations.
2. Define the components of a Brief Intervention using the Feedback-Listening-Options (FLO) process in the spirit of Motivational Interviewing.
3. Explain the clinical importance of assessing the patient/client’s readiness to change.

Dr. Denice Colson, LPC, CPCS, MAC

 Denice Colson is trained as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Master Addiction Counselor, who has contributed to the counseling field since 1982. She is the author of Stop Treating Symptoms and Start Resolving Trauma! Inside-Out Healing for Survivors of ALL Types and “Break EVERY Stinking Chain! Healing for Hidden Wounds”. She is a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor through the LPCA of Georgia. She takes a limited number of clients and speaks at luncheons, seminars and other group functions. Also, a Prime Solutions provider, and Certified BrainTek Practitioner.

Dr. Patricia Brown, PhD, MBA, NCACI, CACII, CCS

Patricia Brown has worked in the addiction and behavior management industry for over 30 years.  Dr. Brown’s expertise is in developing and facilitating organizational change through coaching, training and creating knowledge-based organizations. In addition to a Doctorate in Business Administration, Dr. Brown holds state and national certifications in addiction counseling. She also a holds certification in clinical supervision which she uses to provide oversight and assist potential counselors prepare for state or national counselor exams.

 Marcos Sanchez, CAC II

Marcos Sanchez is currently the director of admissions at Blue Ridge Recovery Center.  Mr. Sanchez has over 25 years of experience in the field of addiction and throughout his career, he has worked at every level of care, in a multitude of settings and with an array of diversity. MR. Sanchez has been a Certified Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counselor since 1998 and during his career has been blessed to be able to work with adult professionals all the way to adolescents. Most recently Marcos worked as the Lead Substance Use Disorder Counselor for a Reentry Program in St. Louis where he helped those that had experienced significant legal issues due to their substance use, reenter society to begin living healthy and productive lives.

 Dr. Leon Spencer, LPC, CPCS

Dr. Leon Spencer is a retired Professor Emeritus of Counselor Education at Georgia Southern University.  He is presently in private practice at Counseling Associates of Statesboro, GA. Dr Spencer is a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor and has worked for 6 years as a Military Family Life Counselor.  He is retired military and served in the Air Force as a Social Actions Superintendent specializing in Family Support, Drug/Alcohol Rehabilitation, Equal Opportunity and Treatment and Race Relations.  He has done extensive work and research focused on multicultural systemic issues, counseling, and anti-oppression.  He developed the first Cross-Cultural graduate course in counselor education at Georgia Southern and is the founder of the Southeastern Cross-Cultural Conference that is in its 21st year.  He has done extensive work and research focused on multicultural systemic issues, counseling, and anti-oppression. He is also engaged in the Satir Process Community work around anti-racism.

Dr. Debra Dantzler, LPC, CPCS, MAC, NCC, EAS-C

Debra Dantzler is a person-centered therapist, author, speaker, and trainer. She is a dynamic change agent for the human experience. Dr. Dantzler has dedicated the past 20 years to serving as a guide for individuals at various stages of personal growth and transition. She is the owner of 3d Psychotherapy, LLC. 3d Psychotherapy LLC is a boutique private practice located in downtown Decatur. Dr. Dantzler is a National Certified Counselor, a Master Addiction Counselor and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Georgia and she holds a doctoral degree in Human Services with a concentration in Addiction.

Dr. Susan Blank, MD

Susan Blank serves as the Medical Director at Caron Atlanta. There she provides support and supervision for the staff, patients and their families. Dr. Blank is also the Co-Founder and Chief Medical officer of Atlanta Healing Center

Dr. Susan Blank is board certified in Forensics Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine, Pain Management, and Functional Medicine.  She is president of the Georgia Society of Addiction Medicine and serves on the Advisory Board of the Georgia Physician's Health Program. 

A graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, she completed a residency in Psychiatry and Neurology at Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She received her training in Forensics at the University of Virginia, and her training in Addiction Medicine in Atlanta at the Talbott Recovery Campus. She also completed a Fellowship and Advance Fellowship training in Anti-aging and Regenerative Medicine.
